Ultrasonic Bird Control? Don’t Throw Your Money Away!

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Written By: Ornithologist Rob Fergus Ph.D.

Summary: Ultrasonic bird control devices can be found in garden centers, home improvement stores and online through bird control product retailers. However, birds cannot hear ultrasonic sounds. This article written by ornithologist Rob Fergus, PhD. seeks to inform consumers about false claims of ultrasonic devices in relation to bird control

Sometimes hardware or lawn & garden companies advertise ultrasonic bird control devices that are supposed to drive birds away with high frequency noises undetectable to humans.  Sounds like a good idea, right?  Blast out sounds birds can hear but we can’t—what’s not to like?

Unfortunately, the truth is that birds do not actually hear these ultrasonic sounds any better than humans do, and there is no scientific evidence that these devices actually work. The bottom line is that birds cannot hear ultrasonic frequencies and ultrasonic devices don’t work. (more…)

Birds Invade Town: La Grange, Ky. Swarmed By Black Birds

Article Shared From: The Huffington Post

Residents in a Kentucky town are saying “Get the flock out of here” to thousands of black birds that fill the sky each night.

At dusk, the birds take flight in La Grange, Ky., and create what some locals describe as a “cloud of birds,” according to TV station WAVE. The birds nest down in a wooded area for the night and depart each morning in a huge pack, reports said.

Fine-feathered friends, they’re not. Residents complain that they’re constantly cleaning up after the avian arrivistes, who started showing up last November in the community northeast of Louisville. Nearly everyone has heard their town compared to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film “The Birds.”

To protect themselves from bird poop, some people have begun carrying umbrellas, even on sunny days, CNN reports. (more…)

PORTLAND — A Southwest Airlines plane struck a bird upon departure from Portland International Airport Saturday afternoon, becoming the first time this year that a bird has damaged an aircraft at PDX.

Flight 3702 was departing for Oakland just before 12:30 p.m. when it hit the bird.  The captain turned around as a precaution and taxied to the gate without being towed.  None of the 136 passengers was injured, but the bird strike damaged the engine and possibly part of a wing.

According to PDX’s website, the flight was rescheduled to depart at 6 p.m.  Some passengers made other connections but nearly 100 of them will continue on to Oakland.

Southwest Airlines said the pilot made the right decision to turn the plane around. (more…)

1986 Department of Defense Video on Airfield Bird Control

FRIGHTENING TECHNIQUES FOR AIRFIELD BIRD CONTROL

Great video made by the Department of Defense in 1986 entitled Frightening Techniques for Airfield Bird Control“. The video is narrated by Leonard Nimoy and compares different methods commonly used or suggested to control birds near airfields, as their proximity poses a risk for bird-plane strikes. The varying degrees of success of  the different bird deterrents available at the time are discussed including information on Ultrasonic and Sonic Bird control units. It’s likely that this was distributed to military bases to educate the pest control and maintenance departments on how to rid their fields of birds.
