Bird-B-Gone: Bird Control Tips

1 Aug, 2011 By: Rich Martin, Bird-B-Gone, Inc.

Pest Management Professional

Just like general pest control, a proper and thorough evaluation of the property is key to a successful bird exclusion program. There are steps that need to be followed and considerations to be taken to determine the proper solution.

Assessing the customer’s situation is one of the first steps to take. It’s important to talk with customers and allow them to tell you what they perceive to be the problem. In a lot of cases, customers won’t call you just because there is a bird on their building. However, they will call you if that bird is costing them money.

Customers don’t call unless they have a specific reason to invest in bird control. In most cases, they buy bird control because of the negative effect on their image, the cost of cleanup, work stoppages, property or equipment damage, or possibly inventory damage. By listening to customers, you can determine their reason and then determine an appropriate cost for their situation. This will show value for the service that you will be proposing. Remember, always restate their reason for buying in your proposal.

When installing bird exclusion products, you will likely be changing the way that the building is going to look. Determine how important aesthetics are to your customer. This will help in choosing what products may or may not be used. During your initial visit, you should determine whether the customer has a budget in place for the project, and whether anyone else is providing a quote.

Bird netting installed to protect historic medieval cathedral

Friday, May 20th, 2011

From York Press:

Workmen abseil down York Minster to install anti-pigeon netting

8:25am Friday 20th May 2011 WORKMEN have abseiled down York Minster to attach protective netting to discourage pigeons from roosting on the medieval cathedral. Netting has been attached to the North West tower due to the large number of pigeons roosting in the area and causing damage and mess. Nets are being installed on three elevations of the tower by workers who abseiled into position. Rebecca Thompson, superintendent of works at the Minster, said: “Installing pigeon netting via abseiling is an environmentally friendly and innovative way of gaining access to some tricky areas of the Minster. “Not only does the netting help us to preserve the Minster, it also provides a clear access to worshipers and visitors,” he said.

Pigeons tapped as source of pollution around Pismo Pier

Pismo Beach Pier/ credits to pismobeach.org

Staff Report | Posted: Monday, August 9, 2010 10:16 am | (0) Comments

A recently completed scientific study has concluded the main source of water pollution near the Pismo Pier is caused by hundreds of pigeons that roost on the wooden structure.

The pigeon flock at the popular pier is estimated to be at least 400 birds, with more than 200 nests under the structure. Additionally, more than 40 percent of the bacteria samples collected from the water around the pier matched bird fecal sources, and the highest count of bird droppings was within 100 meters of the pier, according to the study.

Water samples for the research were collected from three sites extending up Pismo Creek, 10 sites along the beach bracketing Pismo Beach pier, five sites in the ocean off Pismo Beach and one site over the joint Pismo/Arroyo Grande/Oceano wastewater outfall to the south of Pismo Beach. “The data collected in this study clearly show the main source of fecal contamination on the beach is bird droppings near the pier,” Cal Poly professor Dr. Chris Kitts wrote in a final report for the study. Kitts, along with several of his students, conducted the study that aimed to identify the biological sources of fecal contamination in the water. From Bird-B-Gone:

According to the article, the City of Pismo Beach will be holding a public workshop this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the findings and possible solutions to the pigeon problem.

One clear way to prevent pigeons from further contaminating the water under the  pier would be the installation of  Bird Netting. Bird Netting is a humane solution for blocking birds from unwanted areas. When installed correctly, it’s low profile, long lasting, and a humane deterrent for preventing birds from sitting on rafters or beams.

The city might also consider hiring a pest control company who has experience in Bird Control and Bird Net installation. Bird Netting is installed by bird control professionals across the nation in commercial and industrial settings including warehouses, air hangars, loading docks, and other areas. Bird Netting will not harm birds, it would simply block them from the area. Bird Netting for Warehouses, Hangars and Large Commercial Applications

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

by Alex A. Kecskes

bbg 002Pest birds can be both a hazard and an expensive nuisance when they nest and gather in  hangars, under overhangs, warehouses and other large covered areas. But thanks to bird netting, many of these problems can be avoided.

Clearly the most obvious problem created by pest birds is their droppings. These can quickly clog gutters and down pipes. They can also cause ceilings, rooftop turbine ventilators, siding windows and doors to seize up. And they can rapidly deteriorate corrugated metal surfaces, block light sensors and security cameras. Left unchecked, these bird by-products can lead to structural damage and huge repair costs. Equally problematic, bird droppings deposited on entrances and fire escapes can create slip-and-fall hazards for maintenance crews, which can become a huge legal liability to public and private enterprises. Bird netting can solve these problems by keeping pest birds out using a proven humane method.

Without bird netting, one would also have to contend with the incessant and irritating noise pest birds produce when they gather in sizeable numbers. And they do tend to gather in large commercial areas. In warehouses, for example, bird droppings can spoil finished products in loading bays and storage areas. They can severely stain and damage goods, and mar the appearance of costly finished goods and metal panels.
