Marketing – for some business owners and operators this can be a frightening term. With all of the new platforms (and more popping up every day) it can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you are already looking at a full plate.
Adding bird control services is a lucrative way to bring in some extra revenue for Pest or Wildlife Control businesses and other service companies. But how do you get the word out that you do “bird work“? Today, marketing is all about being creative, resourceful, and original – and its easier (and cheaper) than you’d think. Thanks to the internet, there are many free avenues to help let people know that you can help solve a bird problem – too. You can also still rely on some conventional marketing strategies. With a little foresight and planing, you can start your bird control marketing campaign today. (more…)

Bird-B-Gone Ornithologist Rob Fergus has spent a lifetime understanding our “feathered friends” and he’s more than happy to share his insights with the industry.
PCT Magazine | April 30, 2012 |
Editor’s Note: Bobby Corrigan is considered the industry’s foremost “rodentologist” but when it comes to understanding the biology and behavior of birds that honor may go to Dr. Rob Fergus, an ornithologist with Bird-B-Gone, Mission Viejo, Calif. PCT magazine recently interviewed Fergus, who has a Ph.D. in urban bird conservation from the University of Texas, about the challenges of managing bird populations in urban settings, as well as the science of ornithology.
In layman’s terms, how would you describe what an ornithologist does on a daily basis?
A. An ornithologist is anyone who is involved with the scientific study of birds, which can cover anything from their DNA, anatomy and behavior to their ecology and distribution. Some ornithologists study birds or their genes in a lab, while others study free-flying birds in the wild. Academic ornithologists also spend a lot of time teaching university courses on birds, biology or ecology. Most of us do a little of all of this, so on any given day I will be out in the field observing bird behavior, corresponding with other researchers, as well as preparing or teaching university courses. My work with Bird-B-Gone involves field work studying nuisance bird behavior, as well as researching potential bird control solutions, and consulting on commercial and residential bird nuisance problems across the United States and around the world. Bird-B-Gone’s Bird Chase Super Sonic unit was chosen to shoo birds from a NY Subway station

Considering the setting, the sound is difficult to place: a song of the wild, evoking, perhaps, a disturbed rooster accompanied by a small chirping bird.
Every few minutes, the noises resume, an unlikely soundtrack at the entrance to Roosevelt Island subway station.
The bird calls come courtesy of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, but the recorded sound is not the latest example of an underground art or music project. It is actually a weapon against trespassing pigeons.
The authority has had a problem with pigeons entering the station, and leaving their feathers, and more unsightly evidence, on and under the walls. The agency had used netting, similar to chicken wire, beneath the ceiling to try to keep the pigeons at bay. (more…)

It’s important to take a proactive approach when dealing with pest birds. In the long run, it can save you time and money.
There are many reasons to consider deterring birds from your facility. In a nutshell, birds carry and spread disease and bird feces can corrode building materials.
The build-up of bird droppings or nesting materials is not only unsightly, but can host parasites such as bird mites. If birds are allowed to inhabit an area long enough, they will persistently defend it as their territory. (more…)

It’s been said “preventative maintenance is the best kind of maintenance.” If you routinely check your facilities operational systems and equipment, it will save you time and money. Problems are easier and less expensive to fix the sooner they are noticed. Bird control is no different.
Adding bird control to your routine maintenance checklist is a wise decision, considering the impact birds can make on your building. Bird control can save your company time and money, and bird problems are easier to solve the sooner they are detected.
Most preventive maintenance checklists include roofing, HVAC, lighting, furnaces, cooling towers and electrical systems. Birds can negatively impact nearly all of these areas, so including bird control in your regular maintenance makes sense. (more…)

Bird-B-Gone owner Bruce Donoho in Liberia
POSTED ON Feb 21, 2012
Silverdale, WA – February 17, 2012 – Bruce Donoho, the owner and CEO of California-based Bird-B-Gone, will be joining Children of the Nations–USA’s board of directors. The Orange County resident has been a committed advocate and supporter of Children of the Nations (COTN) since he heard COTN founder Chris Clark speak at his church, Presbyterian Church of the Master, in 2008. In 2010, he took a trip to Sierra Leone and Liberia with Clark to see the ministry firsthand, and explore the possibility of expansion into Liberia. His initial trip inspired much deeper involvement—Donoho and Bird-B-Gone have since gone on to fund several major construction projects to benefit COTN’s children in Sierra Leone. “This started out as, if we can just help or save one child that doesn’t have a lot of hope, it’s worth it,” Donoho says. “It’s turned out to be even bigger than that.” (more…)

Mission Viejo, CA – Bird-B-Gone, Inc. leading manufacturer of effective, humane bird deterrents would like to announce a new addition to their line of professional grade bird control products, Heavy Duty Pond Netting.
Recent studies have shown that every year, thousands of protected migratory birds die in tailing or detention ponds used for industrial waste or filtering. Birds mistake these ponds for fresh water and often become poisoned by toxins present in the water.
Pond Netting is used as a physical barrier to prevent birds from landing in toxic tailing ponds or other water collection sites. The netting is stretched over these areas to prevent bird deaths. Installing pond netting will not only protect birds, but will also prevent the hefty fines associated with migratory bird deaths. (more…)

A proactive approach can save time & money

November/ December Issue 2011
You have birds. Whether its pigeons roosting on window sills or gulls nesting near rooftop A.C. units, you know the are creating a problem that must be addressed.
Where Do You Start?
Many facilities pay for landscaping, window washing and other general services to help maintain the appearance and functionality of a building. But what about bird control? The first step is acknowledging the potential hazards birds and bird droppings can create.
Bruce Donoho, Owner of Bird•B•Gone, Inc., a U.S. manufacturer of bird control products, says birds can cause considerable problems for buildings. “The build up of bird droppings and nesting materials can pose a health risk for building tenants, especially if found near ventilation systems. Bird droppings carry disease and those most susceptible are people with compromised immune systems which include the young, elderly, and those with chronic illness. Bird droppings can also corrode building materials and machinery, ruin stored product and cost a business thousands of dollars every year for clean-up.”

Mission Viejo, CA (PRWEB) January 10, 2012
Bird-B-Gone’s Ornithologist, Dr. Rob Fergus, recently gave a lecture to scientists from around the globe on urban bird control at the International Congress for Conservation Biology held in Auckland, New Zealand.
The lecture was titled “Urban bird Conservation: For Birds and People” and focused the practical aspects of urban bird conservation and education. Dr. Fergus also considered how urban bird conservation efforts could be integrated in sustainable city planning and design.
Urban settings attract birds for a variety of reasons, namely shelter and a continual food source. These birds can become a nuisance when they decide to roost or nest in areas where the buildup of bird droppings and nesting materials pose an operational, health or safety risk. Dr. Rob proposed that Ornithologists work with cities and municipalities for humane effective solutions to bird problems.
Dr. Fergus specializes in urban ecology and human/wildlife interactions. He received his Ph.D. in urban bird conservation from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to researching and consulting on human/bird interactions in cities across the United States, Latin America, and Europe, Dr. Fergus currently teaches at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey and Rosemont College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Bird-B-Gone, Inc is the only bird control company with an on staff ornithologist. Customers contact Dr. Fergus through “Ask the Bird Expert” to get answers about humane, effective bird control measures in a variety of settings. The addition of Dr. Fergus to the Bird-B-Gone team has helped close the gap between the science of nature, and the nature of bird control.
