Bird Control is an INVESTMENT? Pest Birds Cost Businesses Every Year

Bird Control?  Why should we care about pest birds?  It seems the latest issue concerning property management and building maintenance companies is Pest Birds.  Every year millions of dollars are spent cleaning up after and repairing the damage caused by pest birds such as pigeons, sea gulls, crows and other urban birds.  Not only are these problems unsightly, but also pest birds and their feces can spread 60 plus transmittable diseases.  Safety, sanitation and health hazards caused by bird droppings can pose serious liability risks, and left untreated, can lead to accidents and lawsuits.  Bird feces, bird nests and debris can also create a bad public image with tenants and patrons.

Pest birds such as pigeons, gulls, starlings, sparrows and swallows can cause thousands of dollars of damage a year to buildings, industrial facilities, equipment and machinery. Building owners and managers are tired of spending thousands of dollars a year cleaning up bird feces or repairing the damage that is caused by the birds and their droppings. Integrated Bird Control Solutions are being used to keep pest birds off of these buildings. An Integrated Solution is one that may use several types of bird control products to eliminate the problem birds and their mess.

Recent Integrated Bird Control Project:

A recent project at United Regional Health Care in Wichita Falls used an Integrated Bird Control System to get rid of pest pigeons from a 14 story, million square foot building.  For buildings of this size one product will not always work:
•    There where window ledges and parapet walls that where nesting and roosting areas for pigeons.  On these sites they used an electric track system to get rid of the pigeons.  These systems give the birds a mild jolt when they come into contact with the track.  The birds will leave the area for a more suitable one.
•    There where large balconies that bird netting was used to exclude the pigeons from
•    On the building ledges a bird slope system was installed to keep the birds from landing.  This type of system creates a slope on the ledge that makes it impossible for the birds to land.  It can be painted to match existing building colors.

They had been struggling with pigeons for years, and now they are nowhere to be found.  The money saved in cleanup costs and damage repairs is well worth the investment in bird control products.  Most building managers find that they make up the cost within the first year of installation.

Commercial Bird Control is becoming a big business in the United States.  Companies all over the country are specializing in bird exclusion installations.  Other companies such as pest control, maintenance, window cleaning and roofing companies are adding bird control to their offerings.  A custom integrated bird control program, once installed can save companies millions in clean up and maintenance dollars each year.  It will also enhance their public image, clean buildings make a much better impression on customers and patrons than do feces covered ones.

Why bird Control? A look at the problems birds can cause in commercial, industrial and residential settings

Birds can become a nuisance when they chose roost or nest in unwanted areas. Birds, bird droppings and nesting materials can negatively impact our surroundings by creating health and safety risks, or detract from buildings architectural features.  Installing bird control products is a humane way to deter birds from landing, roosting or nesting.

Here are some of the main reasons why bird control is import: (From the Bird-B-Gone website)

♦ Birds, bird droppings and nesting materials carry transmittable diseases and ectoparasites.

♦ Bird droppings are highly acidic and can stain and corrode building materials.

♦ Birds can contaminate food production and inventory when they nest in warehouses.

♦ Regular cleanup of bird droppings can cost businesses thousands of dollars every year.

Bird nests can clog drains and pose a fire risk near lighting or other features.

♦ Bird droppings can be a liability by creating a slip and fall risk.

The longer birds are allowed to nest or roost in an unwanted area; the harder it will be to get them to leave. It’s important to take a proactive approach when dealing with pest birds. In the long run, it can save you time and money.

bird diseasesHealth Risk

Birds, bird droppings and nesting materials can carry 60 different diseases and ectoparasites that can be passed to humans and animals. If dried bird droppings are found near ventilation systems, they can travel through buildings potentially infecting inhabitants with compromised immune systems.

Inventory Damage

Droppings can damage products and contaminate production lines. Birds can often be found nesting or perching on rafters in warehouses and storage facilities. Bird droppings present in such areas may violate health codes.

poor imagePoor Image

Bird droppings and nests are an unattractive feature for homes and businesses. Birds on a ledge or sign, or droppings covering a sidewalk may send a message to visitors that the business is careless.

Cost of Cleanup

Businesses that clean up after birds on a daily or weekly basis are wasting money and exposing employees to health risks. Some businesses spend thousands of dollars each year on the regular cleanup of bird droppings. Installing bird control products can save businesses time and money.

Property and Equipment Damage

Bird droppings may render machinery or equipment inoperable or may require regular clean up so operators are not exposed. Bird droppings are highly acidic and can corrode buildings materials and stain fabrics. These will need restoration or complete replacement once damaged.

Health Code Violations

Pest bird droppings found in food processing plants, restaurants, storage facilities or other areas may violate health codes resulting in fines, legal action or closures. Birds are considered a pest and need the same type of consideration as say roaches or rats.

Work Stoppages

Employees should not work in areas that are unsafe due to an accumulation of bird droppings. Bird droppings carry disease and affect those with weakened immune systems. If an employee becomes sick due to an ignored bird problem, the business will most likely be liable.

Slip and Fall Risk

Bird droppings can be slippery.  If a customer or employee falls they may sue the building owner or property manager. A man in New York City was awarded $6 million dollars in 2006 from the city after slipping on pigeon droppings in a subway.

Clogged Drains

Droppings and nesting materials regularly clog drains and gutters. This can cause other problems on roofs and other areas by damming water and creating the potential of flooding.
