Are Your Hog Facilities Bird-proof?

For years, it’s been widely recognized that waterfowl such as ducks and geese are carriers of avian influenza virus and pose a transmission risk to humans as well as livestock. Now researchers are suggesting that some songbirds also carry AIV.

A team of researchers, including Trevon Fuller, University of California, examined samples from 225 bird species in 41 states. They found the average prevalence of AIV in passerines — or perching birds — is greater than the prevalence in eight other bird groups. Perching birds include sparrows, robins, blackbirds, starlings, jays and finches.

From Bird-B-Gone:

Facilities that house and feed animals are a favorite roosting site of pest birds. Often these facilities are open and provide ample rafter areas, food and water needed for survival.  Pest Birds pose a serious health risk, as their droppings carry and transmit disease, such as salmonella. Birds will sit in rafter areas and defecate in feeding troughs or water supplies – posing a direct health risk to the animals.

Feed houses and barns must take measures to protect their livestock from disease by bird proofing their building. Bird Netting is one simple way to remedy such a problem. If you net off a rafter area, birds will simply not be able to land. Netting acts as a physical barrier to block birds. There is heavy duty bird netting that will last 10+ years, and lieghtweight, temporary options.

Bird Gel or Bird Spikes are another great way of keeping birds out of a feed house.  You apply these items to the rafters themselves to keep birds from landing.

Monday, January 18th, 2010

For Immediate Release:

Avian Plus Deters Pest Birds with Pleasant Scents

Mission Viejo, CA- Bird-B-Gone, Inc. worlds largest manufacturer of professional bird control products introduces Avian Plus, a bird hazing system that uses natural scents to deter pest birds from enclosed and semi enclosed areas such as airline hangars, warehouses, storage facilities, loading docks, big box stores and more. Avian Plus is a small wall mounted unit that emits a non-toxic, non-allergenic scent into the air that is pleasing to humans, and unbearable to birds. It makes buildings smell good, while keeping pest birds away at the same time. The natural scents make pest birds feel unbalanced – creating an environment they will want to avoid. Avian Plus is ideal for keeping pest birds from roosting or nesting in indoor rafter areas.

Avian Plus was developed by the aerobiology and infection control unit at Prolitec, Inc. – world leader in innovative air treatment technologies. Avian Plus is an “always on” system which works continuously to produce an invisible vapor and maintain a constant level of hazing scent.  Avian Plus leaves no residue behind and uses significantly less liquid than other fogging or hazing systems. Each unit is computer controlled and can be programmed to fit the size/space of any area. Avian Plus is available in two sizes to serve spaces up to 250,000 cubic feet per unit.  Avian Plus from Bird-B-Gone, Inc.  is the most advanced hazing unit available, the scent being distributed is not a pesticide and is safe and humane to use for pest bird problems.

“Companies Partner to Support Wounded American War Veterans”

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

From PCTonline.com:

woundedvetsCRANFORD, N.J. – Chris Donaghy of Residex and Bruce Donoho of Bird-B-Gone have partnered to donate a handcrank competitive cycle to the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans.

“Bruce and I would like to express our gratitude to the servicemen and women of the US military by giving back to those who sacrificed so much to keep the world free from tyranny,” said Donaghy.

The Achilles Freedom Team was founded in 2004 to introduce marathon racing to wounded war veterans as part of their rehabilitation.

This is the second handcrank donated by Residex in 2009 since partnering with the charity.  Both competitive cycles are stationed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.  Upon arrival at the hospital, wounded servicemen and women are encouraged by Achilles Freedom Team members to integrate the use of the cycles as part of their rehabilitation.  Despite their disabilities, many remarkable wounded veterans go on to incorporate competitive marathon racing into their lives.

Residex expects to surpass their 2009 goal of raising $10,000 for this inspirational charity.  To help support our wounded American war veterans visit www.firstgiving.com/residex.
